Interactive Visual Navigation (IVN) System for Reusable Medical Equipment Reprocessing

Summary of the Project

Background£ºFlexible fiberoptic endoscopes (FFE) are sophisticated reusable medical equipments and need reprocessing before reuse. The reprocessing process is featured by tedious, intricate steps and extensive human involvement, infection risk is a concern if reprocessing process is not properly executed. This problem is compounded by the large number of model types and manufacturers for endoscopes with different reprocessing procedures. Developing an effective reprocessing work process management and control system is extremely important to ensure the quality, productivity and safety in reprocessing process.
Objectives£ºOur overall objective is to develop a comprehensive computerized system to achieve scientific management of the reprocessing process. This system consists of software to present proper reprocessing instructions with the aid of human factor and ergonomics, capture the essential process data, and ensure technician competence; touch screen terminals to display the instructions and visually interact with technicians.
Methods£ºMany best practices in human factors, such as proper text layout, reading level, and graphical interface, are applied to improve the design of our system to reduce human error in reprocessing. We also designed data collection and technical competency checking system based on reprocessing needs. Onsite observations are conducted to access usability of the system.
Results and Conclusions£º Our system is well received by sterile processing technicians and management as an effective tool to guide complex reprocessing processes capture processing data and enhance process compliance. Onsite observations identified several areas for future improvement.
